Serving: Summit, Springfield, Millburn, Short Hills, Berkeley Heights, New Providence, Gillette, and Stirling.
Mission: To strengthen our communities by providing programs incorporating
the values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility
that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all.
History: In 1886, the Summit Area YMCA opened its doors to provide a place where young boys and men could meet for Bible study. Its mission was based on Christian principles: building healthy spirit, mind and body. Today, more than 120 years later, the Y is still working in the community by providing programs and services that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all.
Programs. The Y's four branches include: Berkeley Heights YMCA, Springfield YMCA, The Learning Circle, and the Summit YMCA. We offer a wide-variety of that focuses on having a postivie impact on the well-being of every member of our community. Through wellness programs for every age and developing assets in youth 0 - 18, our programs include: swim lessons and aquatics, child care, community development, day camp, sports and recreation, and fitness and wellness for individuals and families.
The Y's mission is to make all of our programs and facilities available to everyone, regardless of their ability to pay. We believe that by giving everyone the opportunity to build spirit, mind and body at the YMCA, it makes the community as a whole stronger.
The Y is a Charity. Each year, the Summit Area YMCA raises funds from generous members and friends through the Strong Kids Campaign, but the fact is, "kids" are not the campaign's only beneficiaries. The SKC funds a number of community development programs (such as health screenings and lectures) and teen programs (such as the Black and Latino Achievers), it also provides monetary support to anyone who qualifies a need and who wants to participate in the Y's programs or membership (Y Cares Financial Assistance Program).
Y Cares Financial Assistance —helps working families in need of child care as well as offsets summer camp costs for those unable to pay on their own. Additionally, a portion of Y Cares funds are provided to help pay for adult, family, youth or teen memberships at any of the Y's branches.
